Coaches look to take lessons from the loss

NJPE Squirt Major lost their home and league opener to the Jamestown Lakers on Saturday, September 18 by a score of 1-6.  The game was the Lakers first of the season and the Eagles showed some tiredness from their game the night before. Jamestown was just too fast for the Eagles to keep up with.

Lenny Miller got his first start and played well through the first half of the game allowing just 1 goal. Anthony Aquino didn't have much time to get into the game before the Eagles gave up one of many breakaways and the Lakers were up 2-0.

The line of Easton Forbes, Kaiden Hockenberry, and Sammy Dorr stayed hot and got the Eagles back in it a minute later. Forbes jammed in a rebound after Dorr and Hockenberry each put the puck on the net. The Eagles went into the 2nd intermission only down a goal.

Jamestown started quickly with their #4 getting the first of his natural hatrick only a minute into the third. The Eagles were forced to press to try to comeback and the Lakers took advantage scoring on 3 breakaways to ice the game.

While disappointed the Eagles coaching staff stressed team play and aggressive puck battles going forward. Coach Rob is confident the team will learn from this game and be ready to play next Saturday against the West Seneca Wings.

Hockenberry scores 2 in Eagles debut

The NJPE Squirt Major team travelled to Hyde Park Ice Pavilion Friday night and scored a 5-4 victory in a back and forth game against the Power City Bruins. NJPE was led by 2 goals from Kaiden Hockenberry, including the game winner, in his Eagles debut. Damion Hanel scored a goal and an assist to help the cause.

The Eagles played a strong game but were derailed early by some poor changes by the coaching staff. In both cases, the team rallied quickly and fought to keep the game close.

Anthony Aquino started in net and kept the game close in the first with some acrobatic saves. Lenny Miller came on in relief in the 2nd period and played strong in his first game as a goalie.

After the Eagles gained 2 goal lead midway through the third, the Bruins kept it interesting when they scored a dribbler in the final 3 minutes. The Eagles played shutdown defense from there with some smart play by all 3 lines to keep the Bruins without a shot.

Next up for the Eagles is the home opener against the Jamestown Lakers.
